This article will give you some great techniques and ideas you can use if you are looking for into about how to make wood shutters. The process of making wooden shutters can be simple or very complicated - all depending on your experience with building home improvement additions. You will need to have certain materials and measurements on hand ahead of time. But before that, you will have to know exactly what style you are looking to create.

Outdoor wood shutters must be made with a strong frame and sturdy material. In most cases, the shutters will be outside during periods of extreme weather such as thunderstorms, snows storms, and hurricanes (in the southeast). Indoor wood shutters will not need to withstand the weather but will need to be build with a degree of style and elegance so it will accentuate the rest of your home.

Now let's take a look at some of the things you will need for this process.

Tools and Materials

You will need some items to help with the building process of wooden shutters that include a miter saw (or a table saw), deck screws, an electronic drill, wood glue, one tube of filler material, approximately one quart of primer, steel for the mounting frame, and some weatherproof finish. You may also need other items such as clamps, chisels, and a plunge router with a spiral cutting bit.

Some other useful items are a pencil, sandpaper, and a tape measure.

Of course you will also need to wood needed to contruct the shutters. You can use different types of wood such as oak, cherry, maple, cedar, pine, and more.

You can get just about all of the raw materials at home improvement stores such as Lowes or Home Depot.

Showing you exactly how to do the entire process is slightly beyond the scope of this article, but we will summarize the process. You can also find great books and videos that outline how to make wood shutters on Amazon.

Step one  - Make sure you have all the materials.

Step two - Use the table saw to cut out the stiles, slates, louvers, and rails.

Step three - Use sandpaper or a sander to give each of the louvers a rouded edge.

Step four - Cut out the morises and tenon joints in each of the stiles. You can use
a square chisel to do this or a drill press.

Step five - Carve out the tenons in each of the side rails. A radial arm saw is
an ideal tool to use.

Step six - Create a louve jig in the router. This is another job for the radial arm
saw.

Step seven - Carve out the grooves in each of the louvers.

Step eight - Put the louvers in the wooden frame.

Step nine - Finish the louver frame by making sure all the tenons and joints are fitted
properly.

Step 10 - Add paint and a finish to the final product.

Depending on your experience level this task could take a few hours or up to a week. It can be a very satisfying experience when you make your own wood shutters because the final product is more special and unique because your handcrafted it yourself. Wooden blinds are a great addition to any home whether they are made for the indoors
or the outdoors. Good luck!
